From "worm wrangler" to "recycling czar" in a year

It's weird going from reporter to reported: A few months ago, the Connecticut Post ran an article about my roommates and me in regards to our sustainable living project - the Earth House - at Fairfield University. Let's just say I was called the "worm wrangler" and my friends had a field day. Now, in post-grad life, I'm the "recycling czar," according to a new article by the Litchfield County Times. This time, it was in the headline.

Although I cringe when I am singled-out - and having my picture published (ugh!), I am glad this article publicizes and educates people about the "Gimme 5" program and plastics recycling.

Along with the Roxbury Energy Task Force, I am starting a #5-plastic container recycling program for the town. Read the article here to find out details.

If you have questions or comments about the program, post them, and I'll respond!

July/August issue of E/The Environmental Magazine

Check out the July/August issue of E/The Environmental Magazine, on stands now. I am a little biased since I write for the publication, but there are tons of really great articles from talented, knowledgeable journalists.

Also, if you have Facebook, become a fan of E/The Environmental Magazine and receive updates from the magazine's weekly newsletter called "Our Planet." You can also sign up for the newsletter for free or get a subscription to E by clicking here.

Refocusing the reGreen

As you can tell, this is the first post in a really LONG time. I recently graduated college, and, in between working full time and writing, I've contemplated where I want to take this blog.
Because there's so many of you reading my blog - ha - I wanted to let readers know what I plan to cover on this site. Because my passions include food, farming, environmentalism and sustainability, well, there will be a lot about those subjects in posts.
I also have the pleasure of returning to Riverbank Farm, an organic farm in Roxbury, Conn., this year and learning more about agriculture and immerse myself in the local food movement and surround myself with some amazing people. I am a proponent of supporting local growers and businesses as well as seasonal flavors, so look for recipes and pictures from the farm and markets.
If there's something further you'd like to see, please feel free to post a comment. Happy reading!

E May/June issue + mercury in your food

I just wrapped up an awesome internship with E/The Environmental Magazine, and, as part of my loyalty to the publication and the great people who work there, I wanted to give some free publicity and encourage readers to go out and buy the May/June issue, on stands now. Check out some really interesting stories, including the tiny houses trend, the greening of baseball and an article about the presence of mercury in high fructose corn syrup (yes, that one is by me).

The story about mercury in HFCS is a trend I have been following for the past few months, and it is really bothersome, especially since not that people know about the report by the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy. Whether or not companies choose to recognize the report is not the issue; I still have a problem with that fact that there is an inherent flaw in our food system that still allows food in question to remain on the shelves. I may be stating the obvious here, but I'm not really cool with mercury in or near my food.

If you feel as passionate about stopping mercury protection in food, please sign a petition by clicking here.
